Mee Rebus...can anyone tell me what it's meant to look like?

After I went to the gym yesterday Carine came over to visit. Neither of us had dinner yet so we decided to go out and eat. In Belmont there aren’t many places to eat unless you want fast food, which we didn't. Since that was the case, we went down to Vic Park to Makan Makan (yeah, not the most healthiest choice but still).

I walked into the restaurant and it was exactly the same as when I last came to eat – dinghy lighting, oily tables and food scraps everywhere. Carine and I found a table in the corner where it was less crowded. I ordered my typical which was Nasi Briyani (mix meats and vegetables). Carine on the other hand ordered Mee Rebus.

For those of you who don’t know what Mee Rebus is see below,

Mee rebus (literally boiled noodles in English) is a Malay inspired noodle dish. It is most popular in Indonesia where it is called Mi Celor, Malaysia and Singapore.

The dish is made of yellow egg noodles, which are also used in Hokkien mee, with a spicy slightly sweet curry-like gravy. The gravy is made from potatoes, curry powder, water, salted soya beans, dried shrimps, and peanuts. The dish is garnished with a hard boiled egg, calamansi limes, spring onions, Chinese celery, green chillies, fried firm tofu (tau kwa), fried shallots and bean sprouts. Some eateries serve it with beef, though rarely found in hawker centres, or add dark soya sauce to the noodles when served. (Source: Wikipedia)

This is what Mee Rebus looks like

Okay, so hopefully now you have an idea of what this dish is all about.

Anyways, after waiting for about 20 minutes we finally got our drinks (Teh Tarik) and food. I was pretty happy with what I ordered. I looked at Carine and what she had ordered. Hmmm…wait a second, the bowl she received contained soup with noodles, capsicum, onion and some other green vegetable. From the description and image above, when was soup part of it? Also I didn’t see any bean sprouts, hard boiled egg, or any spring onions. What was even worse was when we were ordering they asked Carine whether she wanted chicken or pork. Carine asked for chicken. There were only two cubes (1cm x 1cm x 1cm in size) of chicken in the whole entire dish. Ah-huh, 9 bucks for a piece of crap.

How did the Mee Rebus taste? I can honestly say that it tasted like seafood water with chilli. Carine didn’t end up finishing her dinner which was unfortunate. Even though I enjoyed my dinner I would personally add Makan Makan to that list of 'restaurants to avoid' (See post below).

There you have it folks, another amazing experience at one of Perth's finest.
